Project Description

Join BMWF for a Wilderness 101 Family Campout! Ready to take your family’s outdoor adventures to the next level? Join us for a weekend of hands-on learning and starlit fun. This front-country campout is designed to give families the confidence to explore the backcountry while staying close to ‘modern’ conveniences. This is a great chance to introduce your kiddos to camping and hiking with the chance to learn more about this vast Wilderness area in our backyard.

All Families Welcome: Whether your "family" is traditional, chosen, or a mix of grandparents and guardians, we want you here! This event is open to families of any makeup with participants ranging from ages 12 to 99+.

What You’ll Learn
Our expert instructors will guide you through the essentials of wilderness travel through interactive stations and group activities:

  • Leave No Trace (LNT): Master the Seven Principles to protect our wild spaces.

  • Planning & Prep: Learn how to pack, navigate, and stay safe in the woods.

  • Flora & Fauna: Get to know the plants and wildlife that call the "Bob" home.

  • Pack Stock 101: Discover the vital role of horses and mules in wilderness work.

  • History & Values: Explore the rich heritage and the "Why" behind wilderness preservation.

What’s Included
We want to make this as easy as possible for your family. BMWF provides:

  • Delicious meals: Friday dinner through Sunday lunch

  • Group gear: Cooking supplies, water filtration, and safety equipment. Participants are responsible for their own personal sleeping gear (tents, sleeping bags, and pads). A full packing list will be provided upon registration. BMWF has a gear library if equipment is needed.

  • Expert instruction from seasoned wilderness professionals to help you feel comfortable taking your family on your own adventures!

Cancellation Policy

It is very important to know that you are expected to commit to the project once you sign up. All of our projects take a lot of time and effort to organize and we want to make sure that we have full trips so that we can complete the project as outlined by our Forest Service partners. Please do not sign up for a trip unless you are committed to doing it.

We do, of course, understand that things happen and circumstances change, so if you must cancel, please do so as soon as possible. Cancellations made less than 45 days before the trip and no-shows will forfeit their project registration deposit as a cancellation fee.

While uncommon, BMWF may find it necessary to cancel a project due to low volunteer sign-ups or safety reasons (i.e. wildfires), but will contact volunteers as soon as possible and typically no later than two weeks before the project start date.  For this reason we strongly recommend volunteers purchase trip insurance when making airline reservations or other travel arrangements.

Please fill out the application in the link below. BMWF will notify successful applicants by May 1st.
