Project Description

Enjoy 5 days in the Great Bear Wilderness Area along the Middle Fork of the Flathead River while working to improve some trail erosion along the Charlie Creek Trail. The hike into camp is mostly river grade, but in the woods to keep you cool on your hike in. Just before reaching camp you will be crossing the Middle Fork which can still be about thigh deep this time of year, so make sure to keep those river crossing shoes handy. You will then set up camp at the confluence of Charlie Creek and the Middle Fork where your work will begin. High water in years past has washed out the trail along the river crossing, making it difficult to see where the trail is. You will reinforce the tread, and make trail improvements along Charlie Creek. This area has not seen a lot of love in recent years, so expect lots of sawing and brushing too! And word on the “trail” is this is great huckleberry country if it’s a good season so be prepared for purple fingers and lips!

MEETING PLACE:

Volunteers will meet at the Hungry Horse Ranger Station and caravan to the trailhead.
