Project Description

Join your fellow ski buddies for some good times in the Great Bear Wilderness! Volunteers will meet the Crew Leader Tuesday morning in Hungry Horse and caravan the hour drive to the trailhead.  After sorting gear and supplies for the packer and shouldering your backpack, you will hike the 5 miles into camp. Basecamp will be high on Grant Ridge in the Great Bear Wilderness. Wednesday - Friday volunteers will be working on trail #339. This 11 mile loop is a popular day hike for locals looking for a challenging hike. Unfortunatly the loop has not seen any maintenance for the past few years and is in needs of some tough folks to do some clearing. That is where the Flathead Ski Education Foundation comes to the rescue! Clearing down trees and reestablishing the trail bed (tread) will be the primary focus.  Pulaskis, crosscut saws and hand saws will be the tools of choice. After work relax at camp, or go pick some plentiful huckleberries. There will be a day off mid week to explore the nearby peaks and ridges, hike down to Stanton lake or just sit back and relax at camp. Sunday the groups will pack up and hike back out to the trailhead and civilization. BMWF will provide all food, tools and group gear. Volunteers will meet at the Hungry Horse Ranger Station and caravan to the trailhead.
