Weeds #1: Black Reef

Type of Project: backpacking, hand pulling & spraying weeds
Rating: Moderate
Trip Dates: 06/21/2010 to 06/25/2010
Location: Rocky Mountain Front
Work: Help us kick off the first ever “Weeds Week” sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Ranger District. We’ll have groups of volunteers attacking weeds across the Rocky Mountain Front and this trip has it all!! Enjoy a scenic boat ride across Gibson Reservoir followed by a short steep hike to camp nestled at the base of Black Reef. Your Forest Service crew leader will train volunteers in plant identification and we’ll attack an infestation of Spotted Knapweed. Volunteers can choose to hand pull weeds or work under the direct supervision of the certified herbicide applicator to spray these invaders! The Forest Service will provide stock support to transport food and some personal gear into the backcountry, but volunteers should be prepared to carry the rest of their personal gear. Volunteers will be rewarded with another scenic boat ride across the reservoir Friday afternoon to return to their vehicles. Once you submit your registration to BMWF, you will receive more detailed project information including a suggested packing list and driving directions.

This is a backcountry camping trip with primitive campsites. BMWF will coordinate pack support to bring in tools, food, group gear and maybe some personal gear. You will be asked to provide your own gear and assist in camp chores. Sturdy boots, long pants and work gloves are required. All tools, safety gear and food will be provided.
