Boone and Crockett Club/Montana Wilderness Association #1: Birch Creek Weeds

Type of Project: backpacking, hand pulling weeds
Rating: Moderate
Trip Dates: 07/10/2010 to 07/18/2010
Location: Rocky Mountain Front, Bob Marshall Wilderness
Work: This project seeks to integrate wilderness stewardship, conservation education and community involvement by highlighting conservation issues along the Rocky Mountain Front and a backcountry work project. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation has partnered up with The Boone and Crockett Club and the Montana Wilderness Association to host two of our most exciting projects yet! Volunteers will spend 2 nights tent camping and a full day of educational programming at the Boone and Crockett Club’ss Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch. This 6,000 acre ranch with a world class education and research facility lies in the foothills of the east slope of the Rocky Mountains near Dupuyer, MT adjacent to Forest Service Land and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Volunteers will then head into the field for a 5 day backcountry trip to follow-up on noxious weeds mapping accomplished in 2009 on a project in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association. The sites identified in the 2009 inventory will be the focus of this project and handpulling weeds will be the method employed—no herbicides used here! Hand pulling Spotted Knapweed is an important component of the ongoing battle against noxious weeds and serves to eliminate further inputs of seed sources in a low impact and environmentally sound manner. The crew will return to the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch and education center for a closing program Saturday night before traveling home Sunday. Once you submit your registration to BMWF, you will receive more detailed project information including a suggested packing list and driving directions.

This is a car-camping AND backcountry camping trip with primitive campsites. BMWF will coordinate pack support to bring in tools, food, group gear and maybe some personal gear. You will be asked to provide your own gear and assist in camp chores. Sturdy boots, long pants and work gloves are required. All tools, safety gear and food will be provided.
