BMWF #9: Mt. Wright & West Fork Teton

Type of Project: hiking, trailwork
Rating: Moderate
Trip Dates: 08/14/2010 to 08/15/2010
Location: Rocky Mountain Front
Work: Want to join a project, but only have a weekend free? Well this is the trip for you! We’ll meet in Choteau and head up to the West Fork of the Teton trailhead (near the ski area) and spend two days working on trails that access the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The summit of Mt. Wright is home to a radio repeater critical to backcountry communication in The Bob. We’ll work on improving this trail by cutting back pesky brush, kicking rocks from the trail, maintaining drainage structures and stacking cairns. Topping out at 8,875ft, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountain Front, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex and even Glacier National Park on a clear day! The crew will tent camp and use the Forest Service cabin for cooking and then get an early start Sunday to inventory weeds on the West Fork Teton trail. We want to keep weeds out of the wilderness and one of the best ways to do it is to treat the source---so we’ll GPS the location of weeds along the first ~4 miles of the trail for future treatment. Your BMWF crew leader will instruct volunteers in plant identification and GPS use so we can map the location of these invaders. Once you submit your registration to BMWF, you will receive more detailed project information including a suggested packing list and driving directions.

This is a car camping trip with outhouse facilities. Participants should bring a daypack with lunch (for Saturday), snacks, water (3 liters recommended) and lightweight rain gear. BMWF will provide dinner on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday. You will be asked to provide your own camping gear and assist in camp chores. Sturdy boots, long pants and work gloves are required. All tools and safety gear will be provided.
Total Miles: 6-8 miles/day
Elevation Gain: +3200' (Mt. Wright), +700' (West Fork Teton)
