Project Description

Join your fellow Backcountry Hunters and Anglers for some boots on the ground stewardship on your public lands in the Bob Marshall Wilderness!  Volunteers will meet the Crew Leader Friday morning in Augusta and caravan the hour drive to the trailhead.  After sorting gear and supplies for the packer and shouldering your backpack, you will hike the 6 miles into camp. Basecamp will be at the Forest Service Pretty Prairie cabin. You will use the cabin for cooking and food storage and camp out under the stars nearby.  Saturday- Tuesday volunteers will be working on trail #265 on the east side of the Sun River. Clearing down trees and opening up the trail corridor will be the primary focus.  Crosscut saws, pulaskis, and hand saws will be the tools of choice. After work relax by the Sun River or try your luck at fishing! You will also have a day off midweek to explore the area (scout some future hunting spots perhaps?) Wednesday the group will pack up and hike back out to the trailhead and civilization.

BHA region one Board Member Frank Vitale and his string of mules are volunteering to pack tools, food and some personal gear into the Wilderness for you!

Trail #265 on the east side of the Sun River is in need of some serious maintenance to make accessible to backcountry hunters. This trail sits on the border of the Sun River Game Preserve!  BMWF will provide all food, tools and group gear. For a packing list and other helpful information:

Volunteers will meet at the F.S. Info station in Augusta MT and caravan to the trailhead.
